Im currently writing a media essay about youth subculture so i thought id share with this piece of information as i found it interesting.
It is important to know where youth culture itself came from, before looking at its subcultures. The dawning of the teenager in the 1950s came about because there was no stage in between being a child and becoming an adult so young people were seen as children until they began work. This process worked fine before the 1950s but after the war there was what was known as the baby boomer period with a high percentage of youth existing, due to the fact that family life had become more stable. It was at this time that the economy became stronger also and with mass production coming into play, post war affluence soon settled in. This affluence majorly affected the youth of that time, which now had access to disposable incomes and increased leisurely time. It was from this that consumer industries noticed a gap in the market and thus the teenager was created as this age group began to be targeted as a prime consumer group.
So yeh, thats why teenagers now exist - because of advertising companys! :P

I'd still be a child if it wasn't for advertising.
ReplyDeleteI'd be an adult! Wait wouldn't you have become an adult when you became index steve? Would you have become a child again after that? If so you'd have been a child and an adult a lot in your life.
ReplyDeleteAdvertising companies also influence youth sub cultures today, case in point; emo's.
